Definintion of Pain and Chronic Pain

(sometimes referred to as Persistent Pain)

Pain: The International Association for the Study of Pain defines pain as “an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage.” This definition makes the point that pain always has a subjective component and there is both a physiological and emotional reaction to that sensation. A functional definition of pain is “whatever the patient says hurts.”

Chronic pain: This is a descriptive term applied to any pain that has persisted for a period longer than that which it normally would be clinically expected to last. It is often defined as pain that has been present for three months or longer.
